PRINCIPAL CONSULTANT
Responsibilities :
Overall management of specialist Technical Consultancy Practice. Liaison with associates in the fields of technical support, quality systems, colour services, sales, marketing and acquisition.

Achievements :
Designed, installed and implemented quality systems meeting the requirements of BS EN ISO 9000. Audited and reviewed the quality systems to maintain continuous quality improvement in accordance with current quality practice. Facilitated change management through teamwork. Produced training courses in auditing, team working, continuous improvement, effective presentation, quality costing and quality tools for problem solving. Currently developing integrated management system to include quality, safety and environmental requirements.
Designed and instigated Health and Safety management and reporting systems to meet clients' requirements including COSHH, accident and incident reporting and permit to work systems. Produced Company Safety Policy documents and risk assessment programmes.
Assigned product labelling requirements to meet the CHIP and CHIP 2 Regulations and packaging requirements to meet the multinational and multi modal Transport of Dangerous Goods Regulations for several companies. Scottish Qualifications Authority certified Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor following self-study Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor to U.K. Paint Company.
Client-commissioned Paint Inspector for a UK, ,250M civil engineering and plant installation project ensuring that pre-painted elements met the requirements of the customer=s specifications and that the quality of the installed product was still satisfactory. This resulted in liaison with the customer and a number of nationally and internationally recognised construction companies.
Undertook, as an expert witness, an evaluation of workmanship of the painting subcontractors during the refurbishment of an embassy for a world class construction company.
Set up calibration standards for supplier of computer-based, match prediction system offering point-of-sale and lab-based, computerised machine tinting.
Developed a water-based, exterior-quality, heavy-duty, textured wall coating. Supervised initial production batches and instigated quality control methods. Offered sales and technical service support to achieve market penetration. Developed a range of quality water-based and solvent-based decorative paints to meet machine tinting requirements including production supervision and instigation of quality control testing. Supported sales effort to obtain both home and export orders. Developed a range of industrial anticorrosive paint coatings to meet stringent off-shore requirements.

1987-1990 TECHNICAL MANAGER INDUSTRIAL COATINGS
Responsibilities :
Member of divisional board and responsible for overall technical, safety and quality management of general industrial, transport, road marking and electrical varnish sectors, analytical services, quality control, colour technology, customer liaison including product and safety information and technical services. Advised production department on safety matters. Represented the Company at the International Nova Paint Club meetings (including presentation of papers on various technical projects), Paint Makers' Association technical meetings and Paint Research Association Technical Steering Committees. Industrial supervisor for Paint Makers Association Open Tech. Course. Liaison with the technical management of Nova Paint Club Members.

Achievements :

Increased customer and technology base by introduction of new product ranges to meet the exacting requirements of modern industry. Maintained Company awareness of new H & S legislation. Introduced and developed new Safety Information Sheet system to meet the requirements of COSHH, the Consumer Protection Act and Section 6 of the Health and Safety at Work Act. Introduced internal risk assessment and monitoring system to ensure conformance with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations. Presented current awareness papers regarding COSHH to Management, Production, Technical and Sales functions. Introduced and enhanced the quality system to achieve Ministry of Defence AQAP registration with the ultimate aim of meeting BS 5750 requirements. Introduced computer colour matching system for industrial and transport finishes. Minimised the company's purchasing costs in conjunction with the Buying Department by rationalisation and evaluation of alternative materials. Offered technical and safety guidance to prospective and existing customers.

1978-1987 LABORATORY SERVICES MANAGER / COMPANY ANALYST
Responsibilities :
Management of the Laboratory Services Department including analytical services, customer product and safety information, raw material control, formulation control, decorative quality control and computer colour matching. Served on Company Safety Committee as Safety Advisor. Management of Coil Coating Division including sales, marketing and technical functions and liaison with the French and Spanish suppliers. Represented the Company at European Coil Coating Association meetings.

Achievements :
Planning and organisation of the relocation of the laboratory. Introduction of modern instrumental analytical techniques including air-monitoring service to customers. Design and development of a computer-based system for labelling to the CPL Regulations. Introduction of Safety Sheets to meet the requirements of the HASAW 1974. Introduction of computer colour match prediction and batch correction system for decorative and industrial products. Introduced range of Coil Coating and Pretreatment materials to the U.K. market. Presented papers on raw material quality control at Paint Research Association Symposium (two occasions).

1975-1978 MINISTRY OF DEFENCE PROCUREMENT EXECUTIVE
HIGHER SCIENTIFIC OFFICER/SCIENTIFIC OFFICER
Responsibilities :
Contractor assessment and surveillance visits in support of AQAP Quality System. Programming development and product evaluation tasks, supervising their progress and reporting results.

Achievements :
Programming, planning and reporting on a 3 year multi-site project on the comparison of artificial weathering machines with natural exposure. Presentation of a paper on the aforementioned at an Oil and Colour Chemists Association symposium. Programming, planning and reporting on an evaluation of coatings for galvanised steel. Development of an on-site test method for measurement of paint film adhesion on motorway bridges. Preparation and presentation of papers on paint technology to M.O.D. engineers. Attended graduate management course at the Civil Service College.

1969-1975 CARSON-HADFIELDS (Bestobell Group)
SENIOR TECHNOLOGIST/TECHNOLOGIST
Responsibilities:
Management of industrial long term development section. New product development to extend the range of products available.

Achievements :
Introduction of marketable products such as non-sag hammer finishes, texture finishes, acrylic polyurethanes.

Responsibilities :
Management of small section for the development of industrial paint products to meet customer requirements.

Achievements :
Development of technically approved samples and supervision of their manufacture.
